Oscar nominee Djimon Hounsou marks the latest to join the cast of Amazon MGM’s remake of the 1980s cult action fantasy classic “Highlander”.
Henry Cavill leads the cast that includes Russell Crowe and Marisa Abela as well as Hounsou’s “Guadians of the Galaxy” co-stars Dave Bautista and Karen Gillan.
The original 1986 film starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, a Medieval Scottish Highlander who discovers he is an immortal warrior. With the help of a swordsman named Ramirez (Sean Connery) the ‘Highlander’ battles other immortals across the centuries.
Cavill is leading the cast as MacLeod alongside Crowe as Ramirez, and Bautista as the villain, The Kurgan. Abela is expected to be this film’s version of forensic scientist Brenda Wyatt (Roxanne Hart) from the original while Gillan will play MacLeod’s mortal first wife Heather.
Hounsou will play an immortal warrior from Africa. Michael Finch wrote the script for the remake, while Neal H. Moritz, Josh Davis, Louise Rosner, Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt are producing.
“John Wick” franchise director Chad Stahelski helms the film, which is due to begin shooting at the end of the month.
