Following its premiere at Venice, Utopia has released the trailer for Mike Figgis’ “Megadoc”. The feature-length fly-on-the-wall documentary deals with Francis Ford Coppola’s decades-long journey to create his self-financed passion project “Megalopolis”.
Oscar-nominated “Leaving Las Vegas” and “Timecode” director Figgis helms the documentary which blends archival material, unfiltered cast interviews and plenty of footage from the set showing off the craziness of the production with conflicts, delays and frustations spilling out.
Figgis filmed through rehearsals, the shoot itself, and during post-production of “Megalopolis” with Aubrey Plaza reportedly helping out a lot – using him to act like the cameraman for her newscaster character Wow Platinum during rehearsals.
The doco also contains footage from table reads back in the early 2000s when the likes of Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro and Ryan Gosling were involved. The likes of Plaza, Adam Driver, Dustin Hoffman, Giancarlo Esposito, Shia LaBeouf, Laurence Fishburne, and Jon Voight can be seen in the trailer along with a fun quote from George Lucas.
Blending Roman history, political allegory and more, the $120 million “Megalopolis” released last year and was a commercial failure with just $14 million grossed at the box-office. Reviews were mixed and the film still hasn’t received a North American physical home media release.
