“Weapons” Heading For $38M+ Debut

New Line Cinema

Numbers are coming in and Zach Cregger’s critically acclaimed “Weapons” looks set to land on the higher end of estimates.

The film is headed for an opening day of over $17 million, including $5.7 million in previews, giving Warner Bros. Pictures its eleventh No. 1 opener this year. Estimates for the opening weekend are now sitting around $38 million or more.

Coincidentally, $38 million is also the film’s production budget, and so the chances of this hitting profit look quite high.

Meanwhile, Disney’s “Freakier Friday” looks set to have an opening day of $12 million, including previews, with the overall weekend looking set to land on about $30 million. The original movie opened on a Wednesday and took in $33.1 million in its first five days.

In third is Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” with a Friday haul of $5 million. Presently, the studio is estimating a third weekend haul of $16-18 million – a drop of around 56% – though that’s a little on the generous side.

Fourth will be the second weekend of “The Bad Guys 2” with the film headed for a second weekend of $10.5 million, a drop of 52%. That’s a sharper drop than its predecessor which fell only 32% in its second weekend despite stiff competition.

“The Naked Gun” rounds out the top five with an $8.2 million take and 52% drop for its second weekend.
