Murphy Offers “Donkey,” “Shrek 5” Update

Dreamworks/Universal Pictures

After a long fifteen-year absence from big screens, next year will see the return of the main “Shrek” franchise with a fifth main entry in the franchise. However, that’s only the beginning.

Last year, while out promoting “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” Eddie Murphy indicated that not only was that fifth film in production, but a spin-off about his character Donkey was being considered: “Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well.”

Cut to a year later, and Murphy is currently out there promoting his new comedy “The Pickup”. Asked by ScreenRant where things stand with the two films, he says they’re still doing recording on the fifth “Shrek”:

“They’re still doing voiceover stuff. We’re still in the booth, and literally, we’re still doing Shrek. We start in September on Donkey, we’re doing a Donkey one, and that’ll be three years from now, but we’re about two years into Shrek 5. Still in the booth and about to start Donkey.”

Asked if “Donkey” will be a film or TV show, he says the project is more comparable to the “Puss in Boots” spin-off films:

“Donkey’s going to be like how Puss in Boots had his own movie, Donkey’s going to have his own movie, own little story with his dragon wife and his kids that are half-dragon and half-donkeys. They’ve written this funny story. We’re doing that, starting that in September.”

While the first “Puss in Boots” was a box-office success, the second one “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” in 2022 became one of DreamWorks most acclaimed animated films.

“Shrek 5” released a teaser earlier this year to a lot of negative reaction towards the film’s animation style.
