“John Carter” Animated Series In The Works

Disney

A new animated series based on author Edgar Rice Burroughs’ legendary John Carter of Mars/Barsoom saga is set to be unveiled at San Diego Comic Con this week.

The Wrap reports that veteran showrunner Michael Kogge is teaming with the Burroughs estate to adapt the pulp hero property in a “visually rich animated format”.

Kogge is known for several “Star Wars” companion books and the “John Carter of Mars” audio books. A first look at the series is set to debut during a Burroughs-themed panel at the convention this Friday.

The original serials followed a Civil War veteran who finds himself transported to the alien world of Barsoom (aka. Mars). He becomes a fearless warrior, contending with bizarre alien creatures, navigating warring civilizations, and falling in love with the fierce Dejah Thoris.

The original works were a major influence on properties like Superman, Conan the Barbarian and even “Avatar”. While the 2012 film adaptation “John Carter” famously bombed upon release, the film has built a devoted fanbase in the years since.

Further details about when and where this series will air will likely come Friday.
