“Ghost of Yōtei” Gets Miike, Watanabe Modes

Sucker Punch Productions

PlayStation and Sucker Punch Productions have taken the wrap off their “Ghost of Tsushima” follow-up “Ghost of Yōtei,” a Sony State of Play presentation this afternoon offering a deep dive into the title’s gameplay.

The original title famously boasted ‘Kurosawa Mode’, a filter paying tribute to the legendary Akira Kurosawa which turned the gameplay black-and-white with added film grain, dust & grain effects, altered audio, along with boosting wind elements.

That mode returns here, but the new title offers two more filmmaker-inspired modes. The first is ‘Miike Mode’ named for the great Takashi Miike (“13 Assassins,” “Ichi the Killer,” “Blade of the Immortal”) which increases blood and mud effects and zooms the camera closer to the player during combat.

The other is ‘Watanbe Mode’, named for anime director Shinichirō Watanabe (“Cowboy Bebop,” “Samurai Champloo”) which adds lo-fi tracks during both exploration and combat, the tracks directed by Watanabe himself.

Sucker Punch indicates ‘Yōtei’ will have a bigger focus on exploration and player freedom with a clue system offering a more natural way to discover landscape secrets, along with new weapons (katana, spear, kusarigama, ōdachi and dual swords), ally system, and all sorts of customisation options.

“Ghost of Yōtei” will be released exclusively for PlayStation 5 on October 2nd.
