A few weeks ago, legendary game creator Hideo Kojima confirmed that an anime adaptation of his “Death Stranding” game franchise is in the works.
Now, “Raised by Wolves” and Denis Villeneuve’s “Prisoners” scribe Aaron Guzikowski has signed to write the screenplay for the project, which is dubbed an “adult-targeted animated feature”.
The signing was announced by both Kojima Productions and L.A.-based animation company Line Mileage.
The partners say the movie, which is currently in development, will be in the same vein as films like the recent “Predator: Killer of Killers” and the upcoming “John Wick” animated prequel.
The new animated feature project is separate from a previously announced live-action adaptation being developed by Kojima Productions with A24. Like that live-action feature though, the animated one won’t remake the game – instead, it will feature an original story unfolding in the same universe.
The games are set in a world after the eponymous cataclysmic event which led to destructive and nightmarish supernatural creatures roaming the Earth and society left devastated and on the brink of collapse. Players take on the role of Sam Bridges (Norman Reedus), a courier delivering supplies to isolated colonies and reconnecting them via a wireless communications network.
Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, and Guillermo del Toro also star in the game. A sequel, which also stars filmmaker George Miller and Troy Baker, hits stores on June 26th.
