“Blue Beetle” Has Worst DCEU Box-Office

Warner Bros. Pictures

The DC Comics adaptation “Blue Beetle” is closing out a two-month global theatrical run as the lowest-grossing feature across the entire decade-long DCEU.

The film has ultimately pulled in a worldwide gross of $128.7 million, with $71.2 million of that amount coming from North America and $57.4 million coming from overseas.

Though it scored a favourable critical reception, the $104 million budgeted feature pulled in just $25 million in its domestic opening weekend and never quite recovered.

Its total puts it behind “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” ($133.8 million) and the pandemic impacted “Wonder Woman 1984” ($169.6 million), both of which scored very mixed reviews which were in sharp contrast to their well-received predecessors.

Numerous external factors didn’t help either such as the strikes involving WGA and SAG-AFTRA preventing promotion by the stars and limiting the film’s marketing. Added to that, it’s a little-known character and overall dismissal of the DC films this year as people wait for the Gunn-Safran reset starting in 2025.

Concerns are obviously high over the fate of James Wan’s “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” releasing in December, though as a much more high-profile title it is expected to do better.

“Blue Beetle” is now available to purchase on digital, and will be available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on October 31st.
