Michael Caine To Play Charles Darwin

Pathe

Just over a week ago, the legend that is Michael Caine said he had “sort of retired” following his lead role in the upcoming feature “The Great Escaper” which marks his first film since the pandemic started.

At the time he told The Telegraph: “I am bloody 90 now, and I can’t walk properly and all that,” and teased that might be his last film but didn’t say definitively. That said, he has teased retirement before, only to backtrack soon after.

Just one week on, he has reportedly signed on to play Charles Darwin in an unspecified film that starts shooting in January. This time, however, he says he’s serious about retirement… mostly.

He confirms to The Guardian: “Yeah. I play Charles Darwin. And that’ll be it. I won’t do another one after.” Pressed by the interviewer if he’s sure, he says: “No! But the point is, can you do it? Can you remember all the lines?”

He then goes on to explain he’s very much enjoying his well earned ‘semi-retirement’: “I’ve got used to not working and staying in bed till 11am and staying out late at night. I love it.”

“The Great Escaper” opens in UK cinemas on October 6th.
