In just under two weeks, CD Projekt Red is launching “Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty,” a spy-thriller expansion for its open-world action-adventure RPG title “Cyberpunk 2077”.
The expansion will add a bunch of new content. However all players, whether they have the expansion or not, will see the base game undergoing a complete and rather massive overhaul with a “2.0 update”.
Said update majorly improves A.I. of enemies and law enforcement, adds a new Relic skill tree, adds vehicle combat and more. It’s expected to be, by far, the most significant update the game has had since launch.
It has also got some worried about how much computing power they’ll need to run it, considering the base game already is taxing enough on many systems.
Earlier this week developer Filip Pierscinski suggested on Twitter that players should “check conditions of your cooling systems in PC” as ‘Phantom Liberty’ is expected to use 90% of a user’s eight-core CPU – meaning it will take a huge toll on your PC. He added a link to German dance band Scooter and their music video for the song “Fire”.
This quickly spawned chatter that the update and DLC might “melt their CPUs,” the chatter getting out of hand enough that Pierscinski had to post a follow-up tweet assuring people it won’t cause any actual melting – but it’s going to pummel your system regardless:
“Follow-up to my previous tweet. My intention was to highlight the need to maintain your cooling systems and check them regularly. Neither Cyberpunk 2077 after 2.0 nor Phantom Liberty will melt your PCs. Game will perform well on recommended hardware.”
“Cyberpunk 2077” with full settings remains a hard game on anything but the top-end systems. Even with an RTX 4080 at 1440p and with DLSS 3.5 on, the game still hovers around the 60fps mark with numerous dips below, according to performance tests.
“Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty” arrives in stores September 26th, with Update 2.0 expected in the days before that.
