The trailer has arrived for “Harry Potter” franchise director David Yates’s new pharmaceutical industry darkly comic drama “Pain Hustlers” for Netflix.
The story follows Liza Drake (Emily Blunt) is a blue-collar single mom who has just lost her job. A chance meeting with pharmaceutical sales rep Pete Brenner (Chris Evans) puts her on an upward trajectory economically but dubious path ethically as she becomes entangled in a dangerous racketeering scheme.
Dealing with her increasingly unhinged boss (Andy Garcia), the worsening medical condition of her daughter (Chloe Coleman), and a growing awareness of the devastation the company is causing forces Liza to examine her choices.
Catherine O’Hara, Jay Duplass and Brian d’Arcy James co-star in the film produced by Lawrence Grey and inspired by Evan Hughes’ book “Pain Hustlers: Crime and Punishment at an Opioid Startup”.
Whilst it marks just the latest screen work to tackle the opiod crisis, Yates says the focus here is “the low-rent end of it, the workaday reps and sales teams striving to make a living in a hugely competitive business of dealing with people’s pain.”
The film will debut this week at the Toronto International Film Festival “Pain Hustlers” opens in select theaters on October 20th and will be available to stream October 27th on Netflix.
