Annapurna Animation is reportedly set to adapt BlueTwelve’s acclaimed PS5 and PC cat video game “Stray” into a feature film. Further specifics of the adaptation are under wraps.
The game itself is a third-person adventure where you play a stray cat who accidentally falls into a mysterious cyberpunk-style city and sets out on a journey of survival in order to return to his family.
The game was first released as a PlayStation console exclusive and on PC mid-2022 where it landed rave reviews. It won two Game Awards honors for best indie and best debut indie game along with being nominated for Game of the Year.
Annapurna Animation’s Robert Baird tells EW:
This is a game that’s all about what makes us human, and there are no humans in it. It’s a buddy comedy about a cat and a robot, and there’s such a hilarious dynamic. So, there’s comedy inherent in this, but there’s not one human being in this movie. I think it’s one of the reasons why the game was incredibly popular, that you are seeing the world through the point of view of an adorable cat.”
The news was announced as part of some key hires at the company, including “Nimona” director Nick Bruno and producer Julie Zackary, the latter serving as Annapurna’s new Head of Animation
Zackary, a former VP of production at Blue Sky Studios, will oversee all aspects of production throughout Annapurna Animation’s division. Erica Pulcini also joins as a Creative Executive developing the film slate.
The company is also working on renowned “Ice Age” director Chris Wedge’s next project “Foo,” whilst Bruno is developing and directing an untitled original feature film – one of several he has in development.
