The release of the romantic comedy “Red, White & Royal Blue” has been met with a rousing reception, according to its streamer.

The Prime Video film launched on August 11th and quickly became the No. 1 movie globally on Prime Video in its premiere weekend.

The streamer is also reporting that has already become one of Prime Video’s top three most-watched romantic comedies of all time (they wouldn’t disclose the other two).

On top of that, Amazon also says the film’s release directly led to a “huge surge in new Prime membership signups” – the title being the first one new accounts watched after subscribing.

An adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s bestselling 2019 novel, it follows Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), son of newly elected United States President Ellen Claremont (Uma Thurman) and the young millennial face of the White House.

That is until he has to interact with his UK counterpart and rival Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine), causing a major uproar at a wedding. The two are forced to play up their non-existent friendship with a goodwill visit to the UK. Forced friendship gives way to real friendship, then blossoms into something more.

Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon MGM Studios says in a statement: “The phenomenal debut of Red, White & Royal Blue is a true testament to the entertaining and inspired storytelling led by the creative minds behind it. Matthew Lopez, Casey McQuiston, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and the entire talented filmmaking team hit it out of the park. We are so proud of this delightful, heartwarming film and could not be more thrilled with the response from fans – existing and new.”

McQuiston’s book is a one-off, and the film covers the book’s story fairly well, so there’s no word as yet regarding a potential sequel. Director/co-writer Matthew Lopez recently revealed an earlier cut of the film clocked in close to three hours but was trimmed to keep the focus on Alex and Henry’s relationship.
