Delayed Third “Spider-Verse” Gets An Update

Sony Pictures Animation

Filmmakers Phil Lord & Christopher Miller have offered an official update on how the “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” film is doing.

The pair produce and co-write the films along with creatively steering them, starting with 2018’s original “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and this year’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”.

Both films were released to great acclaim and strong box-office, but the second one ended on a cliffhanger ahead of a third one that originally aimed to release on March 29th next year.

Then came the double writers/actors strikes, and a lengthy feature piece in Vulture going into the working conditions on ‘Across’ and how ‘Beyond’ sounded not as far along in production as expected. A few weeks later, Sony shifted around their entire slate, and the third Spider-Verse movie was undated.

Speaking with Digital Spy, Lord and Miller assured the outlet that the film will release “when it is ready” and adds:

Lord: “Those conversations are thankfully above our paygrade, but I can tell you we’re already hard at work on it, and we’ll take the time it takes to make it great.”

Miller: “What we’re trying to accomplish with the film is have it be the most satisfying conclusion to the story than it can be, and take it to places that you haven’t been before. And make you laugh and cry, and cheer and think”

The pair also spoke with Games Radar about the visual and auditory changes to certain shots of ‘Across the Spider-verse’ in the home digital release. Miller says:

“There was an international version that was made almost two months before the movie came out because it had to be translated into different languages and these French censors have to decide what the rating of the movie is in Europe.

The team at [Sony Pictures] Imageworks still had some shots that they felt they could do better for the finished version. So, they cleaned up and tweaked those things.”

The pair also produce the dog comedy “Strays” which opens in cinemas this coming Friday.
