Netflix Brings Its Games To TVs, Computers

Two years after they launched games for mobile devices, Netflix is moving forward with doing the same on computers and online TVs.

Starting today, a limited beta test is being rolled out to a small number of members in Canada and the U.K. on select TVs. In addition, the will take place on PCs and Macs through netflix.com on supported browsers in the next few weeks.

To play games on TV, Netflix is using customer’s mobile phones which Netflix VP of games Mike Verdu dubs a “controller that we already have in our hands most of the day” in a blog post.

On PCs and Macs, members can play games on web browsers using a keyboard and mouse. Night School Studio’s “Oxenfree” and Molehew’s “Mining Adventure” will be the initial cloud-gaming test titles.

Netflix’s mobile lineup currently consists of 70 games which aims to jump to 95 by year’s end. Verdu says the limited beta is meant to: “test our game streaming technology and controller, and to improve the member experience over time.”

Netflix’s games on TV will run on select devices from initial partners such as Amazon Fire TVs, Chromecast with Google TV, LG TVs, Nvidia Shield TV, Roku devices and TVs, Samsung Smart TVs and Walmart Onn TV.

Notably left out of that list are Apple TVs, but it is said additional devices will be added “on an ongoing basis”.
