Cruise Drew The Line At One M:I-7 Stunt

Paramount Pictures

Tom Cruise has become famous over the years for basically doing all of his action for real. Hanging off a plane or a building? That’s him doing that. Driving high speed or fighting on top of a train? Same. Yet it turns out there is one thing he won’t do.

Cruise reprises his role as IMF Agent Ethan Hunt in the upcoming action spy thriller “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” – the seventh instalment in the blockbuster series, which is slated for release in around three weeks.

For the film, the actor has to take on a new threat led by Gabriel (Esai Morales), a figure from Ethan’s pre-IMF past and one who is involved with some dangerous A.I. tech.

Gabriel is joined by several offsiders including Pom Klementieff’s Paris – a character we’ve glimpsed in the trailers who appears to be a martial artist with an avant-garde sense of fashion.

During a sequence set in Venice, Ethan and Paris have a physical fight and Klementieff tells EW that she encouraged Cruise to kick her in the stomach for real – but he refused:

“I kept telling him to just kick me here. I was squeezing abs. [I said], ‘You can just go for it.’ He was like ‘No, no, no, no, no.’ I was like, ‘But it’s going to help me!’ But he wouldn’t do it.”

The French actress confirms she speaks French in the film and also talked about her dress sense for the movie:

“[Paris] is very different style-wise from every other actress in the ‘Mission: Impossible’ franchise. She has a side that’s a bit more punk and she doesn’t really give a f—. So that was cool.”

McQuarrie says Paris adds a chaotic element to the film:

“It doesn’t matter how deep in the background she is. You’re going to be watching her at all times and wondering what she’s going to do. She’s a rebel. She’s a killer, she’s extremely skilled and quite lonely too.”

The “Guardians of the Galaxy” actress was also a part of the big car chase sequence set around Rome as she, in a Hummer, is in pursuit of Cruise and Hayley Atwell’s characters driving around in a tiny yellow Fiat and admits that scene was difficult, but not for the reasons you think: “I was trying to not laugh too much because I was having so much fun in the car.”

“Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” is scheduled to hit cinemas on July 12th.
