Producer Talks Idris Elba & “Extraction 3”

Netflix

Netflix’s just-released “Extraction” sequel doesn’t make the mistake that its predecessor did – this time the film makes it quite clear a third one is on the table.

The first film seemingly ended with Australian mercenary Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) falling off a tall bridge in Bangladesh after being shot through the neck.

As the film was designed as a one-and-done, that seemed to be that even as there was the tiniest bit of ambiguity left in the final film with someone watching the kid who was saved from a distance.

The sequel walks back Rake’s death, going to great pains to resurrect the character allowing Hemsworth to continue on. This time, the film ends with the film wide open to more sequels.

Producer Anthony Russo has now teased a potential spinoff with Idris Elba’s mysterious character from the film. Elba makes a brief appearance here as a character known as The Man In The Suit, and Russo tells The Radio Times to expect more from him:

“[It’s] a classic example of a character who doesn’t have a whole lot of screen time, but the screen time that he does have is fascinating and he commands the screen. And that’s part of the reason why we turned to him.

Just thinking about as we move forward with the storytelling, bringing in new elements into the narrative universe, that is very exciting, and combustible and intriguing. So I just know when I watched him in this film, I feel like, ‘oh, geez, there’s more fun to be had with him!”

The original Extraction movie was a major success story, watched by over 99 million households in its first month of release during the early stages of the pandemic. All eyes are now on whether the sequel, which has scored better reviews, can match it in a period where people aren’t so housebound.
