Muschietti Confirmed For Next Batman Film

Warner Bros. Pictures

After weeks of rumors, it’s now finally official – “IT” and “The Flash” director Andy Muschietti will direct “Batman: The Brave and the Bold” at Warner Bros. Pictures.

The film serves as the first Batman movie set within James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC universe and is completely separate from Matt Reeves’ Robert Pattinson-led “The Batman” and its upcoming sequel, which are standalone ‘Elseworlds’ tales not connected to this universe.

The film will be based on the influential comic series authored by Grant Morrison. Those comics imagine a ‘Bat family,’ where Bruce Wayne’s biological son Damian serves as Robin to his dad’s Batman. This will mark the first live-action film appearance of Robin since 1997.

Muschietti’s sister and creative partner Barbara will produce through their Double Dream. In addition, the pair have signed parallel first-look deals with Warner Bros. Pictures and Warner Bros. Television Group/Max says THR.

Gunn and Safran are also onboard to produce, and in a statement to Variety confirming the hiring, they say:

“We saw ‘The Flash; even before taking the reins at DC Studios, and knew we were in the hands of not only a visionary director but a massive DC fan. It’s a magnificent film – funny, emotional, thrilling – and Andy’s affinity and passion for these characters and this world just resonates through every frame.

So, when it came time to find a director for ‘The Brave and the Bold,’ there was really only one choice. Luckily, Andy said yes. Barbara signed on to produce with us, and we were on our way. They’re an extraordinary team, and we couldn’t have better or more inspiring partners as we embark on this thrilling new adventure in the DCU.”

Muschietti marks the third official directorial hire for Gunn and Safran’s inaugural slate of DC films dubbed ‘Gods and Monsters’. Gunn himself is helming “Superman: Legacy”, and James Mangold is set to direct “Swamp Thing”.

Two other films were announced for the slate that have not yet locked directors – “The Authority” and “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”.
