Lark Productions, Cameron Pictures Inc. and Citytv are teaming for the just ordered new series “Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent”.
The first season is planned as ten hour-long episodes, set to premiere in Spring 2024 and is based on Dick Wolf’s mega franchise for Universal Television whom will distribute the series internationally.
The series follows an elite squad of detectives who investigate high-profile crime and corruption in metropolitan Toronto. No casting has been announced at this time though is expected to feature local Canadians.
The title obviously suggests it will take elements from the original “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” which starred Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe and ran for ten seasons between 2001 and 2011.
This follows on from French, Russian and UK spin-offs of the franchise. How this series will fit into the larger L&O world is unclear so crossover episodes seems unlikely.
Hayden Mindell, senior vp of television at Rogers Sports & Media, says: “The timeless appeal of the cases explored in the globally successful Law & Order franchise continue to draw in Citytv audiences week after week.”
Citytv currently broadcasts the three existing NBC “Law and Order” shows in Canada. The new series started development with Universal last year and will begin filming this fall in Toronto ahead of a spring 2024 debut.
