The upcoming “Extraction” sequel isn’t slated to debut for a few more weeks yet, but already the filmmakers involved are thinking towards the future.
Speaking to BroBible’s Post-Credit Podcast, long-time stuntman and stunt coordinator turned filmmaker Sam Hargrave says if the upcoming sequel is well received by fans, then a third film will be greenlit.
The first film became a sensation, arriving on Netflix just as everyone was stuck at home in the early period of the pandemic (April 2020) and so the title drew eyeballs. Now that the sequel is arriving in the post-pandemic era, many are curious to see how it will perform.
Hargrave made his directorial debut on the first “Extraction” in 2020 and added that a story is already in the works:
“We’re kind of waiting to see how the second movie is received. Fingers crossed, if people enjoy the second one, there already is – and this is without spoiling anything – but there is a story in development for a third movie in the works. What it is exactly, I can’t say right now, but I believe there is another adventure in the wind for Tyler Rake.”
In addition, he indicates franchise star Chris Hemsworth has confirmed that he’s game to reprise his role of said Australian mercenary – even with his recent announcement of stepping back from acting in order to spend time with his family:
“He is taking a step back to spend more time with family because he is a family man and that’s very important to him, and enjoy the life that he’s earned. But the desire to take this character as far as it can go, and the fact that he has a franchise outside of the Marvel universe I think are two things that are very enticing to Chris.
Because to be heading a franchise that has the emotional core and depth that Tyler Rake does, and still have this globe-trotting, action grittiness to it – I think those are two pretty cool characteristics and I think he recognizes that. So when we spoke, yes, he said he would be interested in perhaps reprising the role.”
Golshifteh Farahani, Adam Bessa, Olga Kurylenko, Daniel Bernhardt, and Tinatin Dalakishvili co-star in “Extraction 2” which will hit Netflix on Friday, June 16th.
