Nintendo’s “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” has become the fastest-selling game in the franchise’s history.

The gaming giant revealed on Wednesday that the title sold 10 million units worldwide in the first three days of release on May 12th. That also makes it the fastest-selling Nintendo game for any system in Europe and the Americas.

The game also had the biggest UK boxed launch of any game in 2023 – beating “Hogwarts Legacy” by 54%. In a statement, Nintendo of Europe president Stephan Bole says: “In its seventh year, Nintendo Switch momentum continues strongly, as this record-breaking launch shows.”

To put that number in perspective, the fastest-selling game of the year so far was “Hogwarts Legacy”, which sold 12 million copies in its first two weeks. Last Fall’s PlayStation exclusive “God of War Ragnarok” last year sold 5.1 million copies in its first week.

“The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” also pulled in a 96/100 on Metacritic, a rare score just one shy of the 97/100 its predecessor ‘Breath of the Wild’ landed. Even so, it’s very likely to hold the top spot on the best reviewed list of games in 2023.

“The Legend of Zelda” series launched in 1986 and has sold over 130 million units worldwide to date.
