This year’s MTV Movie & TV Awards was set to broadcast live on Sunday, but it was announced that due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike, the network scrapped its live event and went with a pre-taped special.
Drew Barrymore dropped out of hosting duties earlier this week and pledged to return next year. Barrymore had already pre-taped the opening segment of the show, where she was inserted in scenes from films and TV of the past year. Barrymore also won an award for Best Host.
“Scream VI” took the Best Film award along with winning the Best Fight award for the Gale Weathers vs. Ghostface brawl.
“The Last Of Us” took multiple awards, including Best Show, Best Duo for stars Pedro Pascal & Bella Ramsey, and Best Hero for Pascal.
Tom Cruise scored Best Film Performance for “Top Gun: Maverick,” Jenna Ortega won Best TV Performance for “Wednesday,” Adam Sandler won Best Comedy Performance for “Murder Mystery 2”.
“Stranger Things” was also a multiple winner with Best Kick-Ass Cast and Joseph Quinn winning Best Breakthrough.
Elizabeth Olsen won Best Villain for “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” Madison Bailey & Rudy Pankow won Best Kiss for “Outer Banks”.
On the music front, “Come Back Home” from “Purple Hearts” was dubbed the Best Musical Moment on screen this year, whilst Taylor Swift’s “Carolina” won Best Song and “Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me” won best music doco.
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” took Best Competition Series, whilst “The Kardashians” and “Vanderpump Rules” took reality show honors. Jennifer Coolidge won both Most Frightened Performance
and a Comedic Genius Award and used one of her speeches to shout out her support for the striking writers.
