Third “Ant-Man” Sets Unfortunate MCU Record

Marvel

Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” is in the dying days of its theatrical run with the film having just surpassed its predecessors domestic total and grossing $212.6 million in North America.

As of the end of this weekend, the film has pulled in $260.9 million overseas bringing it to a worldwide total of $473.5 million so far. That makes it the highest grossing film of 2023 thus far, not including last year’s late opener “Avatar: The Way of Water”.

Though expected to be beaten by “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” shortly, the film’s box-office numbers also indicate it has broken an unfortunate record for Marvel Studios – its lowest grossing sequel to date.

Originally “Iron Man 2” at $623.9 million worldwide was the lowest-grossing sequel in the MCU until “Ant-Man and the Wasp” came along in 2018 and pulled in just a little less at $622.7 million worldwide.

That’s now been handily beaten by ‘Quantumania’ which will now hold onto that record with its drastically smaller worldwide total. Despite that, and being one of only two MCU films to land a ‘Rotten’ score over at Rotten Tomatoes, the movie isn’t Marvel’s weakest performer and sits 25th on the overall list of 31 MCU films at the box-office and still managed to beat out three Phase 4 films including ” Shang-Chi” ($432M), “Eternals” ($401M) and “Black Widow” ($379M).

Marvel’s soon to open “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” should fare much better here, that film set to open in May and boasts a sub-franchise within the MCU that boasts a far bigger draw than the “Ant-Man” films ever were.
