“Super Mario” Targets $225M+ Global Launch

Illumination

Illumination and Universal Pictures’ “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is about to conquer the Easter holiday box-office.

Arriving worldwide from Wednesday, the Nintendo co-production is on track for at least a $125 million North American opening and a $100 million+ overseas opening – bringing its potential worldwide debut weekend to be at least $225 million.

Should it go over that, and it’s expected the film will, it will beat Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” to have the biggest global debut for a film this year.

Reviews for the film are expected out later today though social media reaction has already begun. The cast has been out heavily promoting the film the last few days, including Chris Pratt, Charlie Day and Jack Black, among others.

Also opening is the Ben Affleck-directed “Air” which is headed for a $16-18 million three-day haul, whilst “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” is expected to snag around $20 million over the five-day with a soft drop from its debut last weekend of around 45%.

‘Mario’ will have little competition in the coming weeks with mostly smaller studio fare on offer like “Renfield,” “The Covenant,” and “Evil Dead Rise” on offer. It doesn’t hit major competition until Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” on May 5th.
