“Ninja Turtles” Gets A “God of War”-Style Game

Paramount Pictures

A new major “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” video game is on the way, though this one will be quite different to any that’s come before.

In an interview with Polygon, Paramount Global’s senior vice president for games Doug Rosen revealed that game will be a third-person single-player action RPG title with the recent era of the award-winning PlayStation “God of War” games directly cited as an inspiration/comparison.

The project will be based on the 2020 Ninja Turtles comic mini-series “The Last Ronin” – a darker, more mature story that unfolds in a future in which all but one of the Turtles is dead.

In the comic, Master Splinter and the other turtles were all exterminated by the Foot Clan, and New York City is now a battle-ravaged wasteland. The sole remaining turtle fights Shredder’s grandson and his minions with all four turtles’ signature weapons: nunchaku, sai, bo staff, and dual katanas. That turtle’s identity is kept a mystery until later in the story.

The game said to be quite authentic to that comic’s approach. Whilst the primary action revolves around the only surviving turtle, the other turtles could be briefly playable in flashback sequences. The game will target an older audience and is said to be a few years off from release.

The news comes in the wake of the acclaimed and successful “Shredder’s Revenge” and “Cowabunga Collection” game titles released last year, the animated “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” film opening this Summer, and Shredder himself popping up in the “Call of Duty” franchise.
