Zack Snyder will be expanding the universe of his upcoming two-part sci-fi feature epic “Rebel Moon” to go beyond their intended release through Netflix.
The films were shot together and production wrapped back in December after an eight-month shoot. The story follows a colony on the edge of the galaxy that is threatened by the armies of the tyrannical regent Belisarius (Ed Skrein). In a desperate attempt, the civilians send out a young woman (Sofia Boutella) to seek warriors from other planets to fight the tyrannical armies.
The film also stars Anthony Hopkins as the voice of a sentient robot, Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Michiel Huisman, Jena Malone, Cary Elwes, Ray Fisher, Corey Stoll, Alfonso Herrera, Cleopatra Coleman, Stuart Martin, Kingston Foster, Ingvar Sigurdsson, Fra Fee, and Staz Nair.
Appearing on The Nerd Queens podcast to speak about the movies, Snyder revealed he’s thinking of doing tie-in elements like a graphic novel and animated short, but then he touched upon an unannounced role-playing video game which is seemingly already in the works. Snyder says:
“The one thing that I am really having a really good time with is, and I don’t even know if I am supposed to talk about it, this RPG that they’re doing that is just literally insane and so immersive and so intense and so huge. We talked about how we would do that game and we just said, ‘Let’s go.’
It was pitched to me, because I’ve always wanted to do an RPG, they were like, ‘We could do at this scale,’ [makes a small gesture with his hands] or we could do it at a ridiculous scale.’ I was like, ‘Well, ridiculous scale is clearly the scale we should be doing it at.’ And they were like, ‘Well, it’s gonna take so much time because we gotta do all these brain dumps. You’ve gotta tell us everything in the universe, what’s happening.’ And I was like, ‘That’s fine. I am happy to do it. Let’s go all the way.'”
Snyder adds he couldn’t say more because he wasn’t supposed to talk about it, so it’s not certain who is developing the game or what kind of RPG it intends to be. Netflix has been making moves into gaming in recent years with hopes of turning its original IP into successful gaming efforts – something like this would be fitting.
The first part of “Rebel Moon” is due out on December 22nd.
