AMC has announced that production has commenced on the spin-off series “The Walking Dead: Rick and Michonne” starring Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira.
The series will continue the journey and love story of the Rick Grimes and Michonne characters with the actors actively involved in conceiving the creative and the continuation of their characters’ story.
This replaces the long talked about, but never quite coalescing, planned movie continuation. Scott M. Gimple will serve as showrunner on the series which is expected to air in 2024. He writes and produces, whilst Gurira will also be credited as a co-creator and co-writer.
Whilst both characters left the main series in the ninth and tenth seasons respectively, the pair were last seen briefly in the series finale as Michonne was out searching for Rick whilst he seemed to briefly escape capture by the unknown armed forces that took him away following the bridge explosion.
The official synopsis for the new series reads:
“This series presents an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world. Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead … And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before?”
The series is one of three new “Walking Dead” limited series in the works continuing the stories of fan-favorite characters – the others being the New York-set “Dead City” with Negan/Maggie arriving in June this year, and the Paris-set “Daryl Dixon” spin-off hitting in the Fall/Winter.
