The Nintendo Switch has now passed both the PlayStation 4 and the company’s own Game Boy to become the third highest-selling gaming console of all time.
122.55 million Switches have reportedly sold as of the end of 2022, the number surpassing the Game Boy Color at 118.69 million, the PlayStation 4 at 117.2 million, and well past the Wii at 101.63 million.
Only two other pieces of gaming hardware sit higher – the reigning champ the PlayStation 2 with 155 million units sold, and the Nintendo DS with 154 million units sold.
The company expects to have sold 18 million consoles by the end of the financial year 2023 (April 2022-March 2023), down from 23 million units in FY22 and 29 million in FY21.
The Switch has also reportedly shipped 994 million games since it launched in 2017, more than any other Nintendo console and nearly ten times that of its predecessor the Wii U.
“Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” remains the best-selling Switch game to date with 52 million followed by “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” (42m), “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” (30m) and “Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” (29m).
Sales for exclusives remain very robust with “Pokemon Scarlet and Violet” selling 20.61 million copies in the six weeks, whilst “Splatoon 3” has moved 10.13 million copies.
A new Nintendo Direct is set to be held Wednesday afternoon and begins at 2pm US-PT, 5pm US-ET and Thursday morning at 9am Australian-EST.
