Whilst the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been commercially successful, even when it underperforms ala “Eternals,” the company’s history regarding video games has been much more of a mixed bag.
Insomniac Games’ two “Marvel’s Spider-Man” titles thus far have been widely acclaimed smash hits, Square Enix’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” was very well-received but failed to meet expectations, and the less said about the disaster that was “Marvel’s Avengers” the better.
More recently came Firaxis Games’ “Marvel’s Midnight Suns,” an ambitious card-based strategy RPG title that received good reviews at launch in December, but it turns out no-one was really listening.
In a tweet yesterday, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier revealed he had spoken with the CEO of Take-Two, Strauss Zelnick, who indicated to him that the game “was a critical success but a commercial flop”.
Zelnick reportedly spoke about the reasoning for the flop, saying that “it’s possible the release window wasn’t perfect” and dragged the game’s sales down. He adds that he “thinks it [the game] could have a long tail”.
“Midnight Suns” was seemingly hurt by multiple delays and then released the same day as the more high-profile sci-fi horror entry “The Callisto Protocol”. More DLC characters are said to be on the way, but there are obvious questions now about the game’s longevity.
Firaxis Games also develops the “XCOM” and “Civilization” franchises.
