Reviews are now out for “Hogwarts Legacy,” Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s long-awaited immersive, open-world action RPG video game title based on the “Harry Potter” franchise.
In the game, you play a student who scores a late acceptance to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the 1800s. You also possess an unusual ability to perceive and master Ancient Magic.
Only the player can determine if they will use their gifts for good or evil, but either way your character holds the key to an ancient secret that threatens to tear the wizarding world apart.
On Metacritic so far, the game has scored between a low of 83 for the PC version to as high as 89 for the Xbox Series X|S version and the rest in between.
In the game players can journey through familiar and new locations, customize their character and craft potions, master spell casting, upgrade talents, and become a truly powerful wizard.
Here’s a sampling of review quotes:
“It’s so rare that we get a licensed, blockbuster game like this. One that so far delivers on a very specific fantasy and then some. What could’ve been a moment of celebration for a series that’s overdue for a great videogame is instead destined to be one of the most divisive games in years. ” – PC Gamer
“It offers a dense and rich open-world to explore complemented perfectly by a surprisingly robust and engaging combat system unlike anything else. While the story does live in the shadow of its predecessors, and managing gear can be repetitive, Hogwarts Legacy is a truly magical experience and utterly bewitching from beginning to end.” – Press Start
“Hogwarts Legacy brilliantly captures the magic of the world of Harry Potter with its beautiful open world, engaging characters and exciting combat. While the open-world elements of the game make it feel more dated than we’d have liked, it’s otherwise the best the Wizarding World has been in a video game.” – VGC
“Hogwarts Legacy is a solid first attempt. If Avalanche can be accused of anything, it’s that the studio has tried to do too much all at once. Something was always going to give – between the massive open world, the messy RPG economy, exciting action combat, and adventure story that wants to cast you as a hero with homework due on Monday. But you can see a world in which a sequel sands down some of the rougher edges, and settles into a finer balance.” – Games Radar
