“Way of Water” Beats “Force Awakens” Box-Office

Disney

After surpassing “Avengers: Infinity War” earlier this week, James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” has now surpassed “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” to take the No. 4 position on the all-time worldwide box-office chart.

Through Friday, the sequel has pulled in $2,074.8 million – overtaking the J.J. Abrams-directed sequel trilogy launcher $2,071 million. That means Cameron now has three of the top four movies ever globally alongside the original “Avatar” at No. 1 and “Titanic” at No. 3 (“Avengers: Endgame” is #2).

The milestone also means Disney has released three of the top five global titles ever, four if you include the Fox released first “Avatar”.

At the rate it’s going, “Avatar: The Way of Water” will top “Titanic” within the next two weeks, however a domestic re-release of “Titanic” February 10th will add to that film’s total and see the two jockeying against each other well into February.

Domestically “Avatar: The Way of Water” the film is expected to rise to $620.9 million this weekend, coming in at eleventh place of all time and just passing “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” which garnered $620.1 million. The biggest international markets for the film have been China ($235.4 milion) and France ($133.2 million).

The film will cede its Dolby screens to Universal’s “Knock at the Cabin” next weekend which is targeting a $17-20 million start. It’s February 17th when things are shaken up though with the arrival of Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” which is tracking for a $120 million four-day Presidents Day weekend haul.
