Filmmaker Fernando Meirelles has confirmed that he’s working on an HBO Max sequel series to his arguably most internationally famous work – the Oscar-nominated 2002 film “City of God”.

Meirelles was honored at CCXP the other week with Collider confirming yesterday he is working on the follow-up to the original epic crime drama which follows a group of teenagers living in the slums of the eponymous suburb of Rio de Janeiro in the 1960s to the early 1980s.

As twenty years have passed since the original film, and double that since its setting, the new film will reportedly boast a good look at how Brazil and the city of Rio have changed since the time of the film,.

Meirelles says that whilst the first film: “talked about the shortcomings of the comunidades. This time, it’s going to be about the power of those comunidades.” Scripts are reportedly being finished, and the streamer plans to film it next year.
