“Callisto Protocol” Suffers Stutter, Mixed Reviews

Krafton

Krafton’s “The Callisto Protocol” had hoped to be the spiritual successor to “Dead Space” as it hails from that legendary game’s famed creator Glen Schofield and his Striking Distance Studios.

Sadly, the just-released title has hit rough waters both in terms of critics and tech issues. Metacritic reviews for the game are respectable but soft with scores in the mid-70s. Reviews praise the atmosphere and look, but call it an undercooked mimic of “Dead Space”.

There’s also reportedly been major issues with the playability, with PlayStation reportedly faring the best followed by Xbox in the middle and PC reportedly getting the worst performance. On PC it’s reportedly getting to the point of the game barely being playable for some users (a reverse of 2020’s “Cyberpunk 2077” situation where PC was mostly fine, console kept crashing).

A patch has already been issued for the PC version to improve gameplay stuttering and the ever-increasing problem on PC of shader compilation issues amongst major new titles. In addition, the creators are promising to work on further optimisations in the days ahead.

Still, that hasn’t been enough to stop a wave of harsh reviews for the game on Steam, where 12,663 reviews have yielded a ‘mixed’ reaction with an almost even split of positive to negative with positive winning slightly at the time of writing.

The game will soon find itself facing off against its predecessor as the remake of “Dead Space” is slated to be released on January 27th.
