Set photos of the various wild costumes have turned Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” movie into one of the more anticipated films of 2023.

Much of the chatter has been about the cast members like Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, along with their fashion choices. One person who is also in it but hasn’t been spotted filming the project to date is comedy star Will Ferrell.

In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Ferrell revealed that his role is that of a fictional CEO of Mattel with his character said to be “insensitive” and “weird”. He tells the outlet Gerwig’s script drew him to the project:

“It is, in my humble opinion, the ultimate example of high art and low art. It’s a loving homage to the brand and, at the same time, couldn’t be more satirical – just an amazing comment on male patriarchy and women in society and why Barbie’s criticized and yet why every little girl still wants to play with Barbie. Boy, when I read it, I was like, ‘This is fantastic.'”

It’s believed actors like Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa and Issa Rae, among others, are playing variations of Barbie dolls in the film, with other cast members potentially playing Mattel employees. Gerwig teased over the weekend that Gosling will sport multiple looks for the film.

“Barbie” also stars Kate McKinnon, Emerald Fennell, America Ferrera, Alexandra Shipp, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Sharon Rooney, Scott Evans, Ritu Arya, Jamie Demetriou, Michael Cera, Hari Nef, Emma Mackey and Connor Swindells.

“Barbie” is slated to hit cinemas on July 23rd 2023.
