Margot Robbie’s “Pirates” Spin-Off Is Dead

Warner Bros. Pictures

Actress Margot Robbie has revealed that the “Pirates of the Caribbean” spin-off, a film that she has been attached to officially since mid-2020, is dead.

Talking with Vanity Fair to promote Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon,” she confirms she’s in pre-production on an “Ocean’s Eleven” prequel that she’ll star in and produce, and she’s readying the “Barbie” movie for release next Summer. As for the ‘Pirates’ movie, that ship has sailed:

We had an idea, and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led – not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story – which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it.”

“Birds of Prey” and “Bumblebee” writer Christina Hodson was penning the script for the female-fronted adventure, which has been dubbed a “wholly original story with new characters under the Pirates moniker”.

The project is separate from the previously announced reboot of the property which is currently in development with original writer Ted Elliott and “Chernobyl” creator Craig Mazin. Jerry Bruckheimer is attached to produce.
