Two of Marvel Studios’ more recent male stars have spoken, albeit vaguely, about their potential returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Speaking to ComicBook.com during a recent appearance at the BoxLunch Holiday Gala, “Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” star Simu Liu was asked about that film’s director Destin Daniel Cretton being hired to direct the upcoming “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” film.
Liu had nothing but praise for his friend and colleague for getting the job, before teasing his own potential appearance:
“I’m just so incredibly happy for him, he’s so deserving of that spot. What makes him such a special filmmaker, and I’ve said this from the beginning, even when we were premiering our movie, is his ability to make a $150 million movie really, really small, in the best possible way.
I’m really looking forward to what he does on that even grander scale of The Avengers because I think it’s easy to maybe get lost in the spectacle of what those movies can be, the vastness and the grandness of it, but if you can maintain the humanity and the human stories, I think that’s what will make a movie memorable and special, and I think Destin’s got it.
I think he’s got it, and I think he deserves this so much. I’m so excited to get to work for him again.”
Liu was then asked if the last sentence confirms his involvement in the film. Liu said while he couldn’t confirm his involvement, he says he thinks that he would be involved in it: “I would think so… I would hope so. Don’t take my word for it.”
Meanwhile, “Eternals” co-star Kumail Nanjiani says he’s ready to return to the MCU if called upon by the powers that be.
Actor Patton Oswalt let slip a little while back that an “Eternals” sequel was on the way, but it seemed speculative Speaking during a recent appearance on the Bingeworthy podcast, Nanjiani was asked about that potential sequel and said:
“I don’t think Patton was right. I think that there was a hoax website – one of those where it’s like one letter off from the real one. They tweeted it, and it spread around, and I think that’s what Patton saw. I honestly don’t know anything. I would love for Kingo to come back. I love playing that character.
That one’s very fun to play, you’re just in a good mood. You do finger guns, you’re like a movie star – what’s not to love? You’re just in a good mood the entire time. I shot that movie for five months, and I think I smiled straight for five months, so I would love to come back… but I genuinely have no idea if or when.”
He also adds if there was any character he’d love Kingo to team up with, it would be Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel:
“I just love that show, and I thought Iman [Vellani] was so good, and I just got to meet her and hang out with her for the first time, and she’s just such a talented actor and such a wonderful human being, and I think we’d be great on screen together.”
No “Eternals” follow-up has been announced. The Cretton-directed “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” is currently scheduled to make its debut in cinemas on May 2nd 2025.
