AMC Turning Cinemas Into ‘Zoom Rooms’

AMC Theaters is partnering with video chat service Zoom in a rather odd bid to allow audience members to video chat from their local multiplex.

At least seventeen AMC venues across the U.S. will work with Zoom to facilitate conference calls between various-sized groups in different locations in what is being dubbed ‘Zoom Rooms’.

Users will be able to book Zoom rooms online at their preferred theater and meeting time and receive a three-hour block of time to virtually host their event across multiple markets at selected locations.

Auditorium sizes are expected to range between 75-150 seats, and prices are TBD. Food and beverage offerings and concierge-style personalized handling of meeting needs will also be available at additional cost.

AMC and Zoom hope to enable companies with decentralized workforces and customer bases to meet for “cohesive virtual and in-person events and meeting experiences”… in surround sound.

The move aims to expand the company’s core business outside of the cinema box-office as exhibitors are still struggling to recover from COVID. Other such revenue-expanding moves in recent times include selling popcorn in malls around the country.
