Fifteen years after it first premiered, the original “Dead Space” is being remade for current console and PC generations. We’ve seen development diaries, an early trailer and more recently a brief two-minute bit of gameplay footage.
Now though, Motive Studio has done a 40-minute live stream talking about this ground-up remake and offering nearly ten minutes of gameplay footage from across multiple levels along with comparisons to the 2008 original. That gameplay footage has now been put together in a reel now available below.
Creative director Roman Campos-Oriola recently spoke with VGC about the upcoming title. They say whilst there are a lot of obvious improvements they did do, like control and camera reactivity, there are some they didn’t do in order to keep the original feeling of the game.
Some elements have changed. Gone are blueprints you have to pick up in order to obtain weapons, replaced by more straightforward weapon pickup allowing players to be able to test weapons more easily.
The zero-G segments have also been altered to be more in line with that of the second and third games, and in the process allow players to explore some spaces that already existed in a different way to the original.
There’s an expanded and more intuitive level design with a lot more environmental detail. The tram system is no longer the only way to move between chapters, making for a more seamless experience, and new locked doors incentivize players to revisit earlier areas.
Asked if they’re considering doing the same remake treatment to “Dead Space 2” one day, Campos-Oriola reportedly pointed to the PR rep and laughingly said: “Do you want him to shoot me in the face?”
The “Dead Space” remake will release on January 27th for PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
