In a recently issued statement, Nvidia announced that it is “pressing the ‘unlaunch’ button” on its recently announced RTX 4080 12Gb graphics card.
The company released its top-end RTX 4090 card this week, whilst the mid-tier RTX 4080 16GB is still on track for a November 16th release.
The lower-tier RTX 4080 12GB, which not only boasts less ram but less CUDA cores among other things, has been the subject of controversy since it was announced.
Many have wondered why NVIDIA chose that name instead of properly branding the cheaper lower-tier card as an RTX 4070.
The company now says in the new statement: “The RTX 4080 12GB is a fantastic graphics card, but it’s not named right. Having two GPUs with the 4080 designation is confusing.”
Nvidia hasn’t announced either the card’s new name or price point at this time.
