Simpsons “Waterworld” Game Joke Turns Real

One enjoyable recurring niche joke on “The Simpsons” is the inclusion of fictional video games from “Bonestorm” to “Grand Theft Scratchy”.

A while back, someone made a freeware in-browser adaptation of “Lee Carvallo’s Putting Challenge,” and now Australian Twitch streamer Macaw45 is having a go with a fan-made freeware take on “Kevin Costner’s Waterworld”.

Specifically, it’s a “real and full imagining of the ‘fake’ Waterworld arcade game” seen in the show in which Milhouse tries to play the game but keeps having to sink money into it to make any progress.

Macaw45 says on Twitter that “the game is a full adventure directly based on how it looked during its brief appearance in The Simpsons (as a short joke), but expanded here to be a real game with fleshed out mechanics, multiple stages, boss fights, and a huge quantity of secrets for extra replayability.”

The freeware PC title will reportedly be released during a release stream this coming weekend and a promotional poster drawn by artist @TheJiggeh has also gone online and can be seen on Twitter.
