Google Is Shutting Down Stadia

Just over three years after its announcement, Google’s cloud streaming game service Stadia is being shut down with a January 18th 2023 date set for its demise.

Google will be refunding all Stadia hardware purchases made through the Google Store, and all game and add-on content purchases made through the Stadia store. Pro subscriptions are not refundable.

Most games on the service don’t support cross-platform progression and so it won’t be possible to transfer progress to other platforms. Players will continue to have access to their games library until the end date.

In a statement published on Thursday, Stadia’s General Manager Phil Harrison says the game streamer hadn’t performed up to the company’s expectations. As it’s a streaming service, once the servers are shut down the service is effectively dead as well.

The underlying tech developed for Stadia is being applied to other parts of the company, and Google reportedly remains “deeply committed to gaming”.
