“Woman King” Tracking For $12M Opening

Sony Pictures

The Viola Davis-led African warrior film “The Woman King” is reportedly tracking for a $12 million opening weekend according to Sony, with other studios suggesting it could go higher.

With 56 reviews counted, the Gina Prince-Bythewood-directed film is charting at a fairly incredible 98% (8.1/10) on Rotten Tomatoes and reviews are dubbing it a throwback to the kinds of historical epics not really seen in cinemas anymore.

Previews start Thursday at 3pm in 3,200 locations before expanding to 3,700 venues by Friday. Budgeted at $50 million, the project co-stars John Boyega, Lashana Lynch, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Sheila Atim and Thuso Mbedu.

Also opening is the Ti West-directed and written horror film “Pearl,” starring Mia Goth and based on characters she created with the filmmaker in their “X” film earlier this year. It has scored solid reviews (86% on RT) and will have a release size similar to “X”. In fact, quite a few cinemas are doing a double feature of both. A third film, “MaXXXine,” is in the works.

Finally, there’s last weekend’s top earner “Barbarian” which opened to $10 million and is expected to drop around 55% in its second outing.
