“Black-ish” creator Kenya Barris has been set to both write and direct the planned reimagined adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s iconic book “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” at Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line.
This will be a fresh take but, unlike some other adaptations, this one can draw on elements created in the previous 1939 Oscar-winning film version such as the ruby slippers.
Barris takes over from “The Woodsman” and “Watchmen” series director Nicole Kassell who was originally slated to direct but has now exited. Darren Lemke, Neil Widener and Gavin James all worked on previous drafts of the script.
