Emmy winner Ann Dowd (“The Handmaid’s Tale,” “American Animals”) will join Leslie Odom Jr. and returnee Ellen Burstyn in the planned “The Exorcist” film continuation at Blumhouse, Universal and Peacock.

Filmmaker David Gordon Green, who basically revived the “Halloween” franchise with the recent trilogy, is doing a similar thing here and will direct the planned first film in a new trilogy that serves as a direct sequel to William Friedkin’s 1973 original.

Dowd and Gordon Green previously worked together on 2015’s “Our Brand Is Crisis,” and was the one to first suggest her for what was her breakout role in 2012’s “Compliance”.

Universal and Peacock closed a $400 million deal a year ago to obtain the global rights to “The Exorcist” franchise. Burstyn is reprising her role as Chris MacNeil.
