The past weekend saw Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s “Minions: The Rise of Gru” snag a stellar worldwide box-office opening weekend of just over $200 million.
This Friday sees Disney and Marvel’s “Thor: Love and Thunder” arrive in cinemas and early projections are it will go even higher – the film is on track for domestic and overseas hauls of $150 million each which would mean a global total of around $300 million by end of Sunday.
That would be the second-highest worldwide launch of 2022, behind only “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” which snagged $432 million.
Taika Waititi helms this fourth “Thor” film which, “Nope” and “Bullet Train” aside, marks the latest big-budget tentpole of the Summer. Reviews have run soft for the film, but soft reviews didn’t hurt revenues on titles like the “Doctor Strange” and “Jurassic World” sequels this year.
