Paramount Pictures and Skydance’s very well received “Top Gun: Maverick” grossed a massive $51.8 million on Friday (including $19.3 million in previews).
That puts the film on track to score up to $123 million for the three-day and $150 million for the four-day holiday – beating even the rosiest pre-release estimates.
It could potentially beat out “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” with $139 million as the top Memorial Day weekend opener, and is a lock to be a career-best launch for its star Tom Cruise.
Not only are critics loving it, but audiences too with the film earning a glowing and rare A+ CinemaScore. Overseas the film is doing very strong with a potential three-day haul of $64.7 million.
A lot of eyes are on this release as it marks the first non-superhero major blockbuster opening in half a year (that being “No Time to Die”) and almost 90% of the audience was over 25 – with two-thirds over 35.
Also coming in ahead of expectations was “The Bob’s Burgers Movie” which earned $5.7 million on Friday and is on track for a $19+ million opening.
