With no real major new releases, Marvel Studios’ “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” understandably remained atop the U.S. domestic box office in its second weekend.

Raking in $16.7 million on Friday, that marks an 81% drop from its massive $90 million opening day tally a week ago.

The drop is expected to even out a bit by the weekend’s end with the film likely to gross $60-65 million this weekend to balance out to around a 67% second-weekend drop – one of the steepest drops to date for a Marvel Studios film.

The Sam Raimi-helmed feature has crossed $550 million globally in just nine days and should surpass a $300 million domestic gross sometime over the next week.

The only new wide release this weekend is the Zac Efron-led “Firestarter” remake which also simultaneously premieres on Peacock. The film earned $1.5 million on Friday and is tracking for a $3.6 million weekend overall. Bad critical reviews and a woeful C- CinemaScore isn’t going to help.
