Meg Ryan has set her second directorial feature “What Happens Later” which is described as “an evolved and nostalgic take” on the romantic-comedy genre.

Ryan will also co-star alongside “The X-Files” alum David Duchovny in a story that centers around a couple that meets by chance for the first time decades after splitting up.

Stranded in an airport for a night, they go over what could have been of their relationship if they had stuck together. The story is based on acclaimed playwright Steven Dietz’s play “Shooting Star” with Dietz adapting the script alongside Ryan and Kirk Lynn.

The project comes seven years after Ryan made her directorial debut with the war tale “Ithica” which also marked her sole movie role in the 2010s.

Breaking through in 1986’s “Top Gun” and 1987’s “Innerspace,” Ryan became a go-to romantic comedy female lead for a decade – starring in such films as “When Harry Met Sally,” “Joe Versus the Volcano,” “Sleepless in Seattle,” “IQ,” “French Kiss,” “You’ve Got Mail” and “Kate and Leopold”.

“What Happens Later” is reportedly targeting a 2023 release.
