Don’t expect to hear Aqua’s iconic 1997 song “Barbie Girl” as part of Greta Gerwig’s live-action “Barbie” movie next year.

In the wake of the first release photo last week from the movie, there’s been an online push that the upbeat, double entendre laced parody song should appear in the soundtrack to the Mattel and Warner Bros. Pictures film.

However, Aqua lead singer Lene Nystrøm’s manager Ulrich Møller-Jørgensen told Variety quite definitively this week: “The song will not be used in the movie.”

The lack of inclusion isn’t surprising as after the song became a phenomenon, lawsuits and counter lawsuits arose between Aqua and Mattel over claims of trademark infringement and defamation – all of which were ultimately thrown out in court with the judge saying: “the parties are advised to chill”.

The “Barbie” movie will arrive in cinemas on July 21st.
