Principal photography has officially gotten underway on “The Color Purple,” a new film adaptation of the Tony-winning stage musical based on Alice Walker’s 1982 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.
The novel tells the story of the struggles of a Black southern woman over the course of four decades and was previously directly adapted as a straight dramatic film in 1985 by Steven Spielberg.
Fantasia Barrino, Danielle Brooks, Halle Bailey, Ciara, Taraji P. Henson, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Louis Gossett Jr., and David Alan Grier star in the film which adapts the stage musical incarnation that first arrived on Broadway in 2005 and saw a revival in 2015.
Blitz Bazawule (“Beyonce: Black is King”) directs the project which also has Danish cinematographer Dan Laustsen (“The Shape of Water,” “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum”) serving as director of photography. Marcus Gardley penned the script, while Spielberg, Quincy Jones and Oprah Winfrey will produce.
The new “The Color Purple” arrives in cinemas on December 20th 2023.
